LIFTOFF: 5 Content Marketing Lessons Learned Relaunching Our Site

T-minus 1…LIFTOFF! We have ignition. RocketManDigital.com is off the launchpad.

Over the last 3 years, Rocket Man Digital has established itself as the best hands-on content marketing partner in the universe.

  1. We’ve built a team of experts to deliver best-in-class content for our clients, and we measure the results to their bottom line.
  2. We’ve spoken to audiences around the country, sharing our expertise on how content is the fuel to their business.
  3. We’ve sat down with clients, tracking their progress as our content feeds their digital ecosystem. And, we’ve watched these companies grow.

But there still was a slight problem. While feeding content into some of today’s most energetic digital platforms for clients, our digital story was withering on the vine. We (well, let’s change that to I) was too busy working production schedules, meeting new clients, delivering content strategies and keeping all the balls in the air to clearly tell our own story. And, the shame of it, I didn’t even promote the fantastic work the Rocket Man Digital team is cranking out at light speed for clients.
So, I finally made good on a New Year’s resolution. Update RocketManDigital.com, and tell our story in the most simple, engaging and responsive way possible. It was time to give potential clients and partners a peek at our ever-growing capabilities.

I had 3 very important goals to hit before we went live:

  1. Tell our story. In our own voice. Highlighting our special expertise in content marketing.
  2. Launch with #CMWorld 2015. That’s right, it’s the week when all eyes and ears are on content marketing. It’s the perfect time not only to join, but to also lead the conversation.
  3. Be at our best, on any device. We need to demonstrate the best in content marketing, in-bound marketing, whatever you want to call it. We need to show what engaging, relevant content looks like, on any device.

Along the way, we learned some very important lessons bound to help all our clients as we amp up their digital-marketing efforts:

LESSON 1: Partner with the Best. While we’re the tops at creating engaging, revenue-generating content for the digital space, we needed to find partners who could bring our own vision to life. That’s why we looked look for 2 things when seeking partners:

  1. The most talented
  2. The most passionate

Note, I didn’t say the most well known. Or companies with the largest social media reach. And definitely not the most expensive. It all comes down to talent and passion. Who did we use?

Webknowledgy: Building what you see was our nuts-to-bolts web developer at Webknowledgy. Led by Nathan @almquist, Webknowledgy (webknowledgy.com) delivered on our clean vision, within our budget. He not only delivered front-and-back-end excellence on our site, Nathan’s Webknowledgy team also supports many of our client projects, too.

Red Dog Studios: Shout out to Minneapolis’ Red Dog Studios, run by the uber-talented visionary Rich Wong (pheasantandhare.com) and @pheasantandhare on Instagram. He and food stylist Sara Bartus allowed us to give you a peek behind the scenes at his photo studio, where we shoot lots of our best-in-food photography and GIFs.

Nicole Lunger Multimedia: We couldn’t tell our story without videographer and photographer Nicole. (@nlungs on Instagram; nicolelunger.com). This young talent behind the camera proves she has the chops to pull together awesome storytelling, shoot with an incredible eye and seamlessly editing. We gave her a heavy list of deliverables, and she nailed it. Glad to have her on the Rocket Man team.

LESSON 2: Keep a Production Schedule. To me, this really is Rule No. 1. Easier said than done at times, when client work comes before your own. But that made us realize one thing. We need a production calendar for ourselves, just like our clients. The only way to keep projects on track is with an exceptional project manager who can guide the team along a detailed content calendar. We have to give credit to our own and first Rocket Man Digital team member, Angela H.

LESSION 3: Be Your Best on All Devices. A responsive site was a must. Not just a nice thing to have. A responsive site adjusts to different screen sizes, from smartphones and tablets to laptops. It’s become the norm today, but not all responsive sites operate as smoothly as ours. In fact, my personal opinion is RocketManDigital.com is even better on mobile. It should be. That’s where most are going to view it!

LESSON 4: Video Engages. During our site build, we simultaneously began recording a video series we call “3Qs with Rocket Man Digital.” Check out “Episode 1: Who is Rocket Man” on our About page. Once we saw the edited versions, there was no doubt that video is the most compelling way to tell our own story. People can immediately see, feel and hear our passion for great content. Let us help you strap on the mic and tell your story in the only way you know how—from the heart!

LESSON 5: It’s Never Going to Be Perfect. Like all web sites, the build, tweaks and (drumroll) content should never really end. It’s up to us to keep it fresh to keep you and countless others coming back to see what cutting-edge content looks and how it performs. So, expect improvements. Expect more video. Expect more conversation.

And, expect the Rocket Man Digital team to bring you more examples of content that fuels business through this blog—Radioactive Content.
